Climate Change update

UN Climate Change Conference – Copenhagen, 7th – 18th December

From 7 - 18 December 2009, representatives of over 180 countries will gather in Copenhagen for the United Nations Climate Change Conference, known as COP15. The United Kingdom, United States, India and China will attend, amongst others. For two weeks, the United Nations will work towards agreeing a climate treaty that will act as a successor to the Kyoto Protocol from 2012 onwards. Key issues to be discussed include; how to finance the help needed by developing countries to adapt to the impacts of climate change; and how much countries are willing to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases. For more information on COP15 Copenhagen and to keep up-to-date with the discussions, visit the dedicated website http://en.cop15.dk/

The impact of a global temperature rise of 4°C

The impacts of climate change will be widespread across the globe. In order to understand more about what the human impact of high-end climate change might be, and therefore what would happen if a successful agreement can not be reached at Copenhagen in December, the UK's Met Office Hadley Centre has produced a map outlining some of the impacts that may occur if the global average temperature rises by 4°C above the pre-industrial climate average. The map represents the latest peer-reviewed science on the impacts. For further information and to see the 4°C map click here: http://www.actoncopenhagen.decc.gov.uk.

Dorset Towns come together in Transition

Representatives of Transition Groups throughout Dorset came together over the Bank Holiday weekend to receive specialist training on how to start a group, and learn more about the grassroots environmental movement which is spreading across the County.

Trainers from Transition Town Totnes, one of the first initiatives in the county, Sophy Banks and Naresh Giangrande guided participants from 10 groups in the County including Bridport, Weymouth, Sherborne, Purbeck, and Poole & Bournemouth through an intensive 2 day course focusing on understanding and applying the fundamentals of Transition Towns back into their communities.

Participants learnt skills including how to set up, run, and maintain a successful transition initiative, and the training was packed with imaginative and inspiring ways to delve into both the theory and practice of Transition.

Cafe, one of the funders have written a short case study, it can be downloaded here.

Sustainability Champions elected as voice for third sector

Sustainability and Environment Forum representatives (left to right) Mike Clark, Paul McIntosh, Richard Toft, Jyoti Fernandes, Trevor Muddimer and Mike Jones.

Seven new champions for sustainability have been elected by voluntary organisations all over Dorset. They will be the voice of a new Sustainability and Environment Forum, which is open to all voluntary and social enterprise organisations in the county who are working to make Dorset sustainable and to care for its environment.

The champions will attend meetings of the Dorset Strategic Partnership and the local community partnerships, to put their experience of practical grass roots projects, and the Forum’s angle on policy, at the disposal of each partnership. Representatives have been elected to the local partnerships in Christchurch, East Dorset, West Dorset, and Weymouth & Portland.

The Sustainability and Environment Forum has been set up by DA21, the county sustainability charity, and Dorset Community Action, with support from the Dorset Strategic Partnership and Capacity Builders, a national scheme to support the voluntary sector.

The Forum is open to new members, and any organisation which would like to become a member is invited to contact Rob Griffith at Dorset Community Action on 01305 216421.

Launch of a Dorset e-Network for Sustainability
24th October

DA21 is launching a sustainability e-network for Dorset. It will be a valuable virtual resource, enabling network members to feed into important decisions in different parts of the county.

Community planning, through the Dorset Strategic Partnership and the Local Strategic Partnerships (LSPs) across the county, is growing in importance as the way decisions are made and funding distributed.

By developing a cohesive and consistent Network presence at all the LSPs, DA21 hopes organisations working for sustainability can work together to put sustainability for local communities on the agenda for planners and decision-makers.

A directory of sustainability organisations has already been developed and recently updated, click here to access it. If you are interested in attending this event please contact us
